Dear creatives and the rest of humanity alike, Keep hope.
Sometimes, things just don’t go as you planned or anticipated, and there’s nothing you can do about it. You can prep, plot, plan and scheme for days, weeks, months or even years and something as simple as a text message could change the course of everything.
I experienced this recently. Early in the day I had a wrench thrown into a production that I’ve been working on and had scheduled to shoot the following day. Every time I fixed something and thought I had all mended there would be another wrench thrown in and wreck the whole thing again.
For several hours, I sent texts and emails and made phone calls, trying to do everything I could to save the shoot day and not postpone. At this point I had quite a lot of time and money invested in the production and to see it crumble in front of my eyes was pretty disheartening.
I don’t say this in hopes for your sorrow. Quite the opposite. I’m telling you this so that you will keep going. Keep pushing! What I had to realize, was that nothing actually did crumble. Everything is totally fine. It’s a setback. Sure, there are deadlines to meet as well as expectations, but at the end of the day it always works out. It’s always okay.
What IS important is to not give up! The largest mountain between where you are and were you want to be is patience and persistence. You have to climb that mountain one step at a time, but every step counts.
At times, you’ll feel that you’re making strides and gallops, and other times you’ll feel like an avalanche is knocking you back down to the bottom. You may lay disheartened in the rubble for a while, but at some point you have to get your ass up and climb some more!
The other thing you’ll notice, as I did yesterday, is that there are folks around you that are reaching out their hand to help you up. That want to see you succeed, and they’re on your side. That’s a hell of a realization! Just knowing that is encouraging!
Those same folks may also tell you that it’s time to rest, because forcing yourself forward may do more harm than good right now. To bring it back out of the analogy, my friend as well as my fiancé both told me, as I was coming to the end of my resources, “It may just be time to call it and reschedule. It’s better to start fresh that to compromise the integrity of your goals.”
I know that when they said that it was from a great and good place of love and care, but that's of course not what you want to hear. It doesn’t make it any less true. All of that to say, if you have something you want to achieve, a place you want to be… keep going. You can do it, and you’ll be surprised along the way who is routing for you.
It’s quite easy to get on social media today and see people that seem to be in a place that we wish to be. It’s easy to feel that they have no struggles and that their days are filled with rainbows and unicorns that fly on clouds of their greatest desires. I can assure you, this is rarely the case. Everyone has shit. Everyone. It’s all in how you deal with that shit.
Please, keep going. I want to see you achieve. I have to believe you can. I have to believe I can.
Go get ‘em, Tiger
